Border wants Smith replaced as captain

Should Warner replace Smith?
Should Warner replace Smith?

Former Australian skipper Allan Border has advocated for David Warner to take over the T20 captaincy from Steve Smith on a permanent basis, saying it's the smartest move to ensure Smith stays fresher for longer.

After a stunning Ashes campaign Smith's performances dropped off in the ODI series against England and he's been rested for the entire T20 tri-series while Warner has taken the reigns, leading the Aussies to tonight's final against the Kiwis.

Border believes Smith's workload is tough enough as it is and is confident he will benefit from taking breathers instead of playing in the game's shortest format.

"It's not a bad idea is it (for Warner to take over the T20 captaincy) because obviously the Australian captaincy is a high pressure job and that's if you're only doing Test cricket - then throw in the one-day arena as well," Border said on RSN.

"It's probably not a bad idea to give Steven a break in the T20 game and have David Warner, just a different voice the players can respond to and let Steven just concentrate on what he does best in scoring runs.

"I have no problem with that as a scenario going forward as we play more and more international T20 cricket.

"It wouldn't hurt to be sat down and discuss what the best way forward for him (Smith) as a player and for the team (is)."

Border said Warner's aggressive instincts make him the perfect man to replace Smith in the job.

"He's got that gambler's instinct and it's probably one of those games that you need to bring something slightly different to the table as a captain," Warner said. "He's a very passionate player himself but he's prepared to gamble in certain situations, he backs his players to the hilt.

"It's just a different voice and a different style he brings to the table the players are really responding to and he hasn't played fantastically well himself apart from the other night at Eden Park ... it hasn't really affected his captaincy and that's always a good sign."
