LIFE-LONG Whitsunday local Courtney Carmichael will be competing at this year's Miss Universe Australia pageant and will be putting her best foot forward on the catwalk for the Queensland preliminary heats on the Gold Coast today (Saturday, March 15).

Ms Carmichael first entered the Miss Universe Australia pageant two years ago and was a Queensland finalist in the competition.

The 21-year-old is completing a dual degree in business and law by correspondence at the Central Queensland University and recently joined the team at PRDnationwide Whitsunday as a sales consultant.

She decided to enter the Miss Universe Australia pageant three weeks ago and is looking forward to promoting the body image of a healthy young woman.

"I want to promote a healthier body image than when I first entered the competition because it is important for girl's to understand that their body will change as they get older and they should feel comfortable with that and love the body they have," she said.

All Miss Universe Australia contestants will be assessed by a panel of three judges at the Queensland preliminary heats which will be held at the Golf Coast Turf Club today.

Contestants will be judged on cocktail wear and introduction, a swimwear catwalk challenge and evening wear which will be followed by a question and answer session on current state and national affairs.

Ms Carmichael will be up against some of the most beautiful young women from across the state, who are all hoping to follow in the footsteps of Queensland's Erin McNaught, Rachael Finch, Jesinta Campbell and Jennifer Hawkins.

The state final will be held at the Hotel Grand Chancellor in Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast on April 9.
