Local MP calls on Turnbull to drop cruel family cuts

PRIME Minister Malcolm Turnbull has been challenged by Blair MP Shayne Neumann to drop his cruel cuts to local families or take them to an election.

Cuts to family payments currently in the Parliament include the abolition of end-of-year supplements, which 1.5 million low-and-middle-income families receive to help them make ends meet.

"Malcolm Turnbull is due to hand down his first Budget in 10 weeks," Mr Neumann said.

"His government voted for cuts that will increase the cost of living for more than 14,588 low-income families in Ipswich and the Somerset Region. His cuts will leave some families as much as $5,000 a year worse off.

"Malcolm Turnbull just doesn't get it. Local families are struggling with cost of living expenses but he is determined to inflict more pain on their household budgets.

Mr Neumann said the Prime Minister had 10 weeks to drop his unfair cuts to families or take them to an election.

"Malcolm Turnbull needs to be honest with the people of Blair, " Mr Neumann said.

"Local people should be able to vote on the Liberals' relentless attack on their household budgets".

The Liberals are also trying to cut paid parental leave for 80,000 new mums, leaving some as much as $11,800 worse off after the birth of their baby.

Labor will stand with Australian families against these cuts every day up to the next election.

The clock is ticking.

It's time for Malcolm Turnbull to drop his cuts to families.
