TWO Sunshine Coast adventurers have helped design the course that will test competitors in the Anaconda Adventure Race in Noosa on  August 11, 12.

More than 1000 competitors are expected to enter the opening round of the Anaconda Adventure Race National Series.

Veteran racer Jan Leverton and fellow competitor Kim Beckinsale helped plot this year's course and hope that the event will prove a winner with the region.

"It's been about a year in the making, working out access to state forests etcetera," Leverton said.

"I don't think the course will be as tough as the Gold Coast but it'll be a long race."

The feature event of the weekend will be the Anaconda Adventure Race on the Sunday, which will start at Noosa Main Beach and cover more than 60km.

For Leverton and Beckinsale, the race offers the opportunity to add to already impressive records.

The pair has won more than 40 adventure races, including a swag of Anaconda events.

Leverton said they would be looking for more success in August.

"Kim won the 2009-10 Anaconda female series and I've won the veteran (over-50) category a few times," she said.

Event manager Sam Maffett said the gruelling event should take elite competitors about four hours to finish and more social competitors up to eight hours.

Leverton encouraged athletes of all abilities to take part in the weekend's activities.

"There's team and individual events, so all levels of people can get involved," she said.

"We're hoping to get more women involved this year."

On Saturday morning the Anaconda Mini will take place. It is an event similar to the main race but only half the distance.

Following the Mini, the junior event, designed for children between five and 13 years, will be held around the Noosa Spit.

Maffett said activities would be held throughout the weekend, with jumping castles and kids' activities.

Entries for the race will be taken until the day of the event.
