Best Actor has gone to Samuel Johnson for his role in Molly and the actor dedicated the award to his sister Connie.
In his acceptance speech, Johnson said: "My sister is succumbing to the perils of cancer after a three decade long struggle."
Instead of "rolling over" she is putting together a row of coins in the biggest love heart Australia has ever seen to raise money for cancer research. He called on Australia to throw its support behind the challenge and donate.
Earlier on the red carpet, Johnson said he had hoped to bring his sister Connie with him but said she was not up to it.
"It's so tough I wanted nothing more than for her to be here," Johnson said.
The Molly mini series actor said Connie has undergone 11 years of chemotherapy and recently decided to stop future treatment.
"Her body just can't handle it anymore. She is lapping it up with her kids and enjoying life before it takes hold. It's the reality of cancer. She is entering her final chapters and she is going down swinging which is why I f-ing love her so much.
Johnson said Connie was saving herself to take part in a Love My Sister campaign to raise money.
"She is literally building a massive love heart out of five cent coins and she is breaking a world record for the longest line of coins which is like 72 kilometres."
Johnson said he was amazed at TV's night of night's calling it "hallucinogenic."
"It's the most absurd night of the year. It's really trippy. It's a circus."
