A FATHER-OF-TWO tragically lost his life in a freak accident in the early hours of Monday morning.
The Courier Mail reported that Longreach butcher, Ryan Savage (pictured), was celebrating at a mate's bucks party hours before he was run over and killed by a senior police officer in Cairns.
It's understood Assistant Commissioner Paul Taylor was pulling into work at the Cairns District Police headquarters at 4.20am when he drove over Mr Savage who was lying at the entrance of the underground carpark.
Family and friends of the Central Queensland community have described Mr Savage as a well-liked, big hearted businessman.
Reports suggest Mr Savage, the owner of BF Savage and Co Butchery, might have been drunk and passed out on the driveway.
The city's party precinct is located just a block from the police station.
Queensland Police Commissioner Ian Stewart called Mr Taylor to check on his welfare and stated he was "holding up pretty well".
Mr Taylor had been ordered to stand aside to allow "public confidence in the impartiality and integrity of the investigation".
Longreach Mayor Joe Owens said it was a tragedy.
"It's not his (Mr Taylor's) fault. There's no blame. He couldn't see him. It was dark, it was an accident," Cr Owens said.
"But a human life has been lost tragically and now he's got to live with that for the rest of his life."
Mr Savage's cousin Sally said everyone was deeply grieving.
"It has shaken this small town. He's got a beautiful wife and two gorgeous little boys. He was very well-liked," she said.
