Looking for adventure

CLIMBING mountains, cocktail sipping in Honolulu or Bali and horse racing in Melbourne - Mackay people have vastly different holiday destinations for 2012 but they all want value for money.

The strong Aussie dollar is driving our holiday choices with the USA and south-east Asia among the most popular Harvey World Travel bookings for this year.

But increasingly Mackay people are looking to do something a bit different on their annual leave.

General manager of Harvey World Travel Mackay Steven Boxall said adventure holidays to destinations such as Mt Kilimanjaro and Antarctica were popular.

"Now it seems that people are looking to branch out. We've got a few people doing Kilimanjaro, Kokoda," he said. "We've got 16 people going to Antarctica."

Holidays involving sporting events are also big this year. Mr Boxall said eight people had booked to go watch the Tour de France, while there were many bookings for the annual Melbourne Cup Cruise.

The State of Origin packages to Melbourne sold out before Christmas, much earlier than Harvey World Travel had anticipated.

"The whole sports travel thing is pretty popular this year," Mr Boxall said.

In terms of popular destinations, the US, Hawaii, Bali and Vietnam are at the top.

Many Mackay people are also taking advantage of good deals close to home. Mr Boxall said bookings for holidays to the Whitsunday Islands had been huge in the first few weeks of January.
