Mackay doctor stung with drink-driving charge

A MACKAY doctor who has been on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic has been charged with drink-driving.

Resident Medical Officer Ravin Govindaraju, who works at Mackay Hospital and Health Service, was intercepted during police patrols on River St at 12.20am on June 7.

Police observed Govindaraju's sedan driving along Sydney St.

Govindaraju submitted to a roadside breath test which provided a positive result.

He told police he had drunk three whiskeys (20ml each) mixed with water.

Govindaraju said his latest drink had been 15 minutes prior and he had been rushing to see his partner who had been feeling unwell.

Govindaraju, who pleaded guilty in Mackay Magistrates Court to drink-driving, blew 0.082 BAC.

He told police he had tried to get an Uber but could not find any in the area.

"He's more than 1.5 times over the limit," Magistrate Damien Dwyer said.

"I normally say in these circumstances, sir, that you should go and talk to a doctor about the dissipation of alcohol in your system when people get it wrong like you.

"You might want to have a cup of tea and talk to a colleague because you were a long way out."

No conviction was recorded. He was fined $600 and disqualified from driving for two months.
