MACKAY teenager Mercedes King who was struck down with the flu and admitted to a Brisbane hospital last month is "doing very well" according to family.

On August 27, the 14-year-old's health began to deteriorate and she began suffering flu like symptoms.

Mercedes' organs began shutting down faster than doctors could help her, so she was placed in an induced coma and later flown to Brisbane, where family said she had been struck down by influenza B, pneumonia, sepsis and an unidentified bacterial infection.

But yesterday the family posted good news to the GoFundMe page that was set up to help while their daughter was in hospital.

"Mercedes is doing very well," it read.

"She has been taken off the ventilator and is breathing with very little assistance now.

"She is communicating with her family and keen to get out of bed.

"She has many more bridges to cross but is making wonderful progress each day."

A spokesperson for the Lady Cilento Children's Hospital confirmed Mercedes was now in a stable condition.

Last week, speaking to the Daily Mercury on behalf of Mercedes' mother, aunty Tennille Wise issued a warning to the dangers of the flu.

"There was no sign of anything like this happening, she is a young, fit, healthy girl..." she said.

"It happened really quickly and they almost lost their daughter.

"If your child has the flu go and get it checked..."
