Ex-cop faces murder charge in south-west Qld town

LOUIS James Mahony faced court today on charges of murdering his girlfriend Lainie Coldwell and allegedly committing fraud.

Charleville Magistrates Court heard the 43-year-old former police officer and meatworker at Western Meat Exporters also allegedly committed fraud to the tune of $152,063.22 from Sun Super Proprietary Limited.

He also was alleged to have attempted to commit fraud by taking out life insurance policies with Swiss RE Life and Health Australia Limited with a total amount of $2.25 million.

He is also accused of attempting to defraud Westpac Banking Corporation of $150,000.

Ms Coldwell was found at the base of a large tree on Walter Street Charleville on August 23, 2009.

She had sustained a head injury. But police allege the scene was staged and that Mahony had killed her with an old-fashioned clothes iron.

Louis became upset in court as one of nine witnesses gave evidence, and the hearing was briefly adjourned for him to compose himself.

The committal-mention has been adjourned until Friday at 10am.

In a bail hearing earlier this year Mahony's lawyer Phil Hardcastle argued that medical evidence against his client was weak, but bail was nonetheless refused.

He has been once again remanded in custody until the Friday date.
