Man accused of assaulting elderly father with screwdriver

A MAN who allegedly assaulted his elderly father with a screwdriver after stealing the older man's car is due to appear in court on four charges.

The 24-year-old man is accused of approaching his 78-year-old father and threatening him with violence before taking his father's four-wheel drive.

Witnesses reported seeing the car driven erratically before it was returned to the Stanthorpe service station from which it was taken earlier.

Police say the younger man took a screwdriver from behind the counter and attempted to attack his father, leaving the elderly man with a cut.

Witnesses intervened and the younger man was soon located in bushland after a short pursuit by police.

He was charged with serious assault, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and breaching a domestic violence order.
