Man charged after pregnant woman killed with tomahawk

A Gold Coast man has been charged with murder, following a tomahawk attack on a pregnant woman on Monday.

Police were called to a home in Varsity Lakes, on the coast's south, about 2.15pm on Monday, where they found the woman suffering from serious head injuries.

She was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition but later died.

A 34-year-old man, believed to be the woman's estranged partner, is scheduled to face Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged with her murder.

It is believed the woman was about nine weeks pregnant.

Police say there was a long history of dometic violence between the couple.
