UPDATE: CRASH investigators are trying to determine what caused a ute to turn in front of a truck, causing a collision which killed a man west of Westbrook last night.
The 48-year-old male driver of the utility died in hospital after being pulled from the crash wreckage.
The crash, which injured the 46-year-old female passenger, occurred about 11pm on the Gore Hwy.
The couple were from Bray Park, north of Brisbane, and investigations suggested the pair had been travelling toward Toowoomba.
It is the second fatal traffic crash on the same stretch of straight highway within 17 hours after a 31-year-old man died at the scene of a single vehicle crash about 6.15am yesterday.
Forensic Crash Unit investigators are attempting to piece together what caused the ute to perform a u-turn in front of a B-double truck carting flour which had been travelling behind the vehicle.
The 52-year-old male driver, from Toowoomba, was taken to Toowoomba Hospital with minor injuries.
FCU Senior Constable Stephen Coote has called for witnesses to the crash, in particular, anyone who may have seen a blue Ford Falcon utility towing a camper trailer which was in the area around the time of the crash.
He said police had contacted the Bray Park man's next of kin but were continuing investigations as to why the couple were travelling on the highway when the crash occurred.
"Police are appealing for witnesses that may have seen a blue Falcon utility with a camper trailer attached that may have been in the same area of the crash within the timeframe," Snr Const. Coote said.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or 4631 6300.
