Man hurt after boat anchor snaps, whips him in face

UPDATE: The man stayed overnight in hospital but was discharged this morning.

EARLIER: RACQ-CQ Rescue winched a Victorian fisherman from the outer edge of the Great Barrier Reef yesterday after he sustained serious injuries in a boating accident.

The 38-year-old man had been fishing in a dory near Knuckle Reef, 90km offshore, and suffered facial injuries when his boat's anchor chain snapped and whipped him in the face.

Incredibly, the injured fisherman managed to return to his primary vessel nearby who then radioed for medical assistance.

An RACQ CQ Rescue spokesperson said the helicopter departed base about 4pm and flew to the pontoon at Knuckle Reef with a doctor, intensive care paramedic and Rescue Crewman aboard.

The injured man, who was conscious and walking around despite deep lacerations to the right side of his face, was transferred by boat to the popular diving spot to be airlifted.

An RACQ CQ Rescue crewman was winched down onto the pontoon to secure the injured man into a safety harness and then both were winched back up into the helicopter which was hovering overhead, the spokesperson said.

Once aboard, the patient was administered pain relief and treated by the doctor and paramedic.

RACQ CQ Rescue arrived at Mackay Base Hospital with the injured man in a stable condition about 5.50pm.

At midnight, the rescue helicopter was tasked to Dysart to airlift a very ill woman to Mackay Base Hospital.

RACQ CQ Rescue returned to base about 3am.
