Man 'stunned' at court response to taser device

WHEN Goodna's Stuart Lyell Bock decided to buy a taser stun gun, the last thing on his mind was a possible jail sentence.

But that's what Bock was looking at after police found him with the weapon.

Police discovered the taser gun at Bock's house when they went there on June 23 to investigate a disturbance.

Prosecutor Sergeant Tracey Laing told Ipswich Magistrates Court yesterday that when police arrived Bock admitted he had a bong in his room. But it was the taser that took their attention.

Defence lawyer Tom Clements said Bock bought the taser on impulse when someone visited his home one day and offered to sell it.

Magistrate Virginia Sturgess told Bock a taser gun was classified as a Category R weapon.

Queensland Police's category of weapons puts it in the same category as a hand grenade, a machine gun or an antitank rifle.

After Bock pleaded guilty to owning the device, Ms Sturgess told him the crime carried a possible maximum penalty of seven years imprisonment.

"You probably bought the taser not thinking that it was something as serious as it is," she said.

Bock was charged with possessing a pipe or utensil and unlawful possession of weapons and fined $400. The taser gun was forfeited to the crown.
