'Maniac in ute nearly killed my father in head-on smash'

AN elderly truck driver was driven off the road by a "maniac" who was speeding in a ute in Toowoomba,  a resident says.

The "very tough and old" retired truck driver, 82, was being driving in Wilsonton just before 9am yesterday by his carer when the incident occurred.

The driver of the ute allegedly came within "centimetres" of causing a head on crash after lurching onto the wrong side of the road near Holy Name Catholic Primary School.

A head-on smash was only avoided after evasive manoeuvres were taken.

The elderly man and the driver were left "very shaken and upset" following the incident.

His daughter warned the public about the incident on a popular Toowoomba crime page last night.

"Just wondering if anyone this morning may have witnessed the maniac in the ute, speeding on the wrong side of the road," she said.

"My dad has seen a number of idiot drivers throughout his career but never have I heard him say he really got a fright.

"He can't believe they didn't collide.

"He braced himself in the passenger seat of the car and thought that was going to be it.

"Thankfully this d******h driver, at the last second swerved back to the correct side of the road."
