Man's car allegedly stolen after leaving it running

A MAN will face Townsville Magistrates Court today after he allegedly stole a vehicle in Cairns.

It will be alleged at about 9.45am a man stopped his car on Lake Street and left it running to enter a shop at which point another man entered the vehicle and drove-off.

Police say they saw the car travelling south on the Bruce Highway at Babinda and indicated for the vehicle to stop. 

The vehicle failed to stop and instead accelerated and overtook vehicles in a dangerous manner.

Police successfully deployed a tyre deflation device on the Bruce Highway, Yabulu near Townsville and the vehicle came to a stop shortly after near the intersection with Bowden Road.

The man ran from the vehicle into thick bushland along the Black River and was located and arrested at about 3pm walking along Arabian Place.

A 38-year-old Hermit Park man has been charged with one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, fail to stop, obstruct police, disqualified driving and possess utensil.
