Marlane fought the law and won

STRIPPED last month of her driver’s licence after a minor car accident in April, retired banker Marlane Nygaard was making good use of its return yesterday by doing some long-overdue grocery shopping.

Mrs Nygaard, 73, had her licence revoked by the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) following a single-car accident at Goonellabah on April 20.

She said her foot slipped onto the accelerator, causing her to crash into a wall of the IGA supermarket, inflicting minor damage to the wall.

But what followed was more traumatic than the accident itself.

Following a late-night visit from police two months after the accident, Mrs Nygaard was sent a letter by the RTA asking her to surrender her licence.

Left with the option of jumping through hoops to get her licence back or fighting the move, the Goonellabah resident chose the latter.

“I have always been a fighter and I wasn’t going to let this sit,” she said.

But a clearly relieved and somewhat jubilant Mrs Nygaard was yesterday celebrating following a phone call from an RTA officer to say her licence had been reinstated.

“It really hit me; the enormity of what it could do to the rest of my life if I didn’t get (my licence) back,” Mrs Nygaard said.

"I am pleased the RTA finally read my file correctly and that justice prevailed.”

Up until the accident, Ms Nygaard had a clean driving record.

The RTA told The Northern Star it had a responsibility to act on police concerns regarding a driver’s capability to safely drive a motor vehicle following an accident.
