A HUSBAND, a wife, a van, and a truck. That's the formula for Peter and Bernadette Radnedge's business - along with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.
Farm Fresh Veg Direct delivers boxes of mixed fruit and vegetables directly to customers' doors in Toowoomba and surrounds.
The couple took over the business 13 years ago, in a classic Gillette-style story of liking a service so much, they bought the company.
"We actually had a guy delivering boxes to us, he had a small run, and I decided to buy it off him," Mr Radnedge said.
"The advantage is being able to buy it from the markets that day and sell it that day. It's a lot fresher than the stuff that gets rotated in the shops.
"It's mainly families that consume a lot - not necessarily people that can't get out to the shops, that's a small part.
"It's those busy families, Mum and Dad both work, so it's easy for them to get it delivered to their door.
"People say they end up getting stuff they wouldn't normally buy - it's a bit of a surprise, a mystery box."
Mrs Radnedge handles the accounts side of the business, which includes about 150 customers in Toowoomba.
Mr Radnedge makes several runs to the Rocklea Markets in Brisbane each week, and spends the rest of the time delivering the boxes to customers' doors.
He said they had customers who had stayed with them throughout their 13 years of operation.
"The people that we keep are the people we build our relationships with," he said.
"They're really loyal once you give them the time and become friends. It's really nice, we've made a lot of friends just from the business.
"(Owning a business) has got its drawbacks, but the positives are that you're in control of your own destiny - the harder you work, the more you make.
"I think you've got to be diligent about what you're doing, and not complacent."
