Matilda is gold for Gympie

The Gold Coast Council is ‘hopping mad’ that Matilda, the Commonwealth Games mascot would be coming to Gympie.

“GYMPIE hasn’t snatched anything” Gympie Regional Councillor Jan Watt said yesterday in response to Gold Coast Councillor Dawn Crichlow’s claims it was “bloody ridiculous” that the Brisbane Commonwealth Games’ mascot, Matilda would be coming to Gympie.

To Cr Watt, the Gympie region is the ‘gateway to the rest of Queensland’.

“And with the Gympie Matilda Roadhouse the busiest in Queensland for Neumann Petroleum, what more appropriate location for the famous icon such as Matilda,” she said.

“I wonder what may be changing Matilda Fuels’ mind about bringing Matilda to Gympie.

“The senior management I met with certainly didn’t seem to have the same opinion as the Gold Coast councillor.

“Matilda Fuels enquired about local planning laws and time frames and it appeared that our (Gympie) requirements were not as restrictive as the Gold Coast City Councils and our processing timeline was far more accommodating with the application being approved late in 2009 in readiness for the arrival some time in December.

“Now that’s not ridiculous at all.”

Cr Watt said it appeared the Gold Coast City Council was “‘hopping mad” about Gympie even being considered as a location and had now overruled their own planning laws, development codes and staff recommendations in order to secure the icon.

“Of course this will be a corporate decision, but may I say it is a pleasure doing business with Matilda Fuels,” Cr Watt said

“You are welcome any time to share your very own Matilda at your busiest location, with the millions of Australians who go through the ‘gateway to the rest of Queensland’.”
