MasterChef loses firecracker Nidhi in surprise elimination

LESS than two weeks after receiving enthusiastic praise from Marco Pierre White, Indian-born cook Nidhi Mahajan's fortunes have turned on MasterChef.

The Adelaide call centre worker made her exit from the reality cooking show tonight after serving up under-cooked, soggy fried potatoes to the judges.

"Even I was shocked when they said my name," she told APN.

"But that's the reality of the show. Somebody has to go and that day was my bad cooking day."

Despite her short time on the show as the fifth contestant sent packing from the Top 24, 30-year-old Nidhi was a favourite among viewers and the judges alike for her bubbly personality and passion for cooking.

Even George Calombaris had a tear in his eye as she departed the MasterChef kitchen.

"MasterChef is a door which has closed for me now but it has opened so many more," she said.

Nidhi and her husband Sumit, whom she met through an arranged marriage, moved to Adelaide from Chandigarh, India three years ago.

She will soon launch her own catering and home delivery company Nidz Kitchen and still plans to one day open her own Indian restaurant.

"It's home-cooked food from my home to your home," she said.

She tips airline captain Brett Carter, Noosa coffee roaster Matt Sinclair, parks ranger Miles Pritchett and teacher Elena Duggan as the cooks to watch out for on the show.

British TV's 'domestic goddess' Nigella Lawson will start her week-long guest role on the show on Sunday.
