Mater Springfield to open tomorrow

THE opening of the Mater Hospital at Springfield Central has arrived and the great news it has come two months ahead of the scheduled date.

The new $85 million, 80 bed hospital, which has been built at Health City, will welcome its first patients tomorrow.

The multi-storey facility includes theatre spaces, inpatient wards, a day surgery unit and a cancer care centre.

It also features 15 medical oncology treatment bays, which will be run in partnership between Mater and Radiation Oncology Queensland.

The new state-of-the-art hospital was announced with much fanfare on May 25, 2013.

Mater Springfield director Fritha Mackay said she could not believe the grand opening had finally arrived.

"The team has been working hard to ensure we fulfil our commitment of building a healthy community at Greater Springfield," she said.

"Last week's 24 hour simulation saw all of the hospital's medical, administrative and hotel services staff run through a number of possible scenarios which they could potentially face in the days ahead."

"Conducting these process simulations was vital to the health and well-being of patients and the hospital community.

"It provided opportunities for staff to perform effectively and efficiently in their new work environment.

"Simulation examples included peri-operative admissions through to discharge, including orthopaedic surgery, ophthalmic surgery, endoscopy and gastrointestinal surgery.," she said.
