MASTERCHEF cook Matt Sinclair is frying up a new venture in his home town.
He and existing business partner Michael 'Moe' Rickard have welcomed two more partners into the fold to open restaurant Sum Yung Guys, in Sunshine Beach on the Sunshine Coast.
Matt was the 2016 runner-up of Channel 10 television series MasterChef. Matt (pictured with wife, Jess) and Moe wound up Brisbane Eat Street market business, Ten Piece Cutlery, and are aiming for a May opening for the new restaurant.
"It's amazing, it's scary of course. It's a pretty big step up from where we were," Matt, 28, said.
"We've got a good team with a lot of experience in the industry. We've reached a point in hospitality you either do it for yourself or get out. It's a big venture but we've got the experience."
Matt will split his time between the front of the restaurant and the kitchen, and his wife Jess, 31, will also help the new restaurant manager at the front of house.
Diners can expect the Asian flavours that Matt favours, with his own spin on traditional dishes.
"We don't want to serve the curries the conventional way," Matt said.
"It will be a wok-fried baby snapper with curry on the base and roti on the side."
The team will focus on modern Asian flavours mixed with Chinese, Korean and Thai, and the restaurant will have a capacity of 90 diners and will also cater for functions.
"The style that we're going for, we want to keep it casual," Matt said.
"We want to have a share-style menu. We want to make it affordable to sample a menu. We want to be at that price point that isn't going to break the bank if people want to dine once a week."
Weekend readers can look forward to Matt sharing a couple of the Sum Yung Guys recipes in upcoming editions.
