VICTORIA'S celebration of amazing racing - the Spring Racing Carnival - has been officially launched at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Despite the start of the carnival commencing at the end of September, past and present heroes of the turf came together to welcome the 50 days of racing and glamour.

Showcasing 'world-class thoroughbred racing', the Spring Racing Carnival exhibits 90 race meetings, attracts hundreds of thousands of spectators and pours millions of dollars into the local economy.

The carnival also puts Victoria on the international map with overseas competitiors, trainers, owners, jockeys and visitors lured to the vibrant atmosphere.

The BMW Caulfield Cup at Caulfield, Tatts Cox Plate at Moonee Valley and Flemington's Emirates Melbourne Cup - the race that stops the nation - highlight the carnival and are complemented by featured country meetings in all parts of Victoria.

However, the action is not confined only to the racecourse with the colour of the fashions on the field lighting up the carnival.
