McKenna to be Suns’ main guy for another two years

AFL: Gold Coast Suns coach Guy McKenna will have two seasons to prove he is the man to turn the fledgling club into a premiership contender after agreeing to a contract extension.

Chief executive Travis Auld said McKenna, whose contract is due to end this season, had agreed to sign on for an additional 12 months.

The former West Coast Eagles star has coached the Suns for the past three seasons, taking the club from easybeats in 2011 to potential finalists this year.

Auld said the club believed the end of the 2015 season was the appropriate time for everyone to make some crucial decisions about the playing list and off-field personnel, including McKenna (pictured).

One player who will be off contract at the end of the 2015 season, but who the club wants to lock up beyond that, is champion midfielder Gary Ablett.

The dual Brownlow medallist told afl.com.au last week he wanted to extend his initial five-year deal to ensure he had the chance to lead the Suns to the ultimate success, an AFL premiership.
