Measles alert issued after Moranbah miner contracts virus

A STATEWIDE measles alert has been issued by Queensland Health after a Moranbah miner was diagnosed with the contagious virus.

The Moranbah man, who works at the Grosvenor Mine, is believed to have contracted the virus while on holiday in Asia.

The Communicable Diseases Unit acting senior director Dr Stephen Lambert said the mine worker had contact with workers at the mine camp and members of the public while contagious.

The miner was at the dining room of the Grosvenor Camp around 6.30-7.30pm on Monday, April 29 and Tuesday, April 30.

"The Department of Health is asking anyone who may have been exposed to the virus to ensure they are protected against measles and to seek medical advice if symptoms develop," Dr Lambert said.

Emerald doctor Ewen McPhee said measles "is a serious problem".

Recently the United Kingdom had reported a confirmed death from measles.

"The classic initial symptoms are of cough, runny nose and conjunctivitis followed by a generalised bright red rash and very high fever. There is no treatment apart from fluids, rest and isolation," Dr McPhee said.

"Measles is not a benign childhood illness. It attacks the brain, heart and lungs causing serious brain infection, heart damage and pneumonia in susceptible people at any age."

On its Facebook site the Department of Health urged anyone born after 1965 that has not had two recorded doses of a measles vaccine to get a free dose of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine from their local GP.

The vaccine is not suitable for pregnant women
