SHE'S a two-time ARIA award winner and multi-platinum artist, but Megan Washington is about to go from hitting high notes to apexes.

Washington is the latest big name about to join the Mazda3 Celebrity Challenge at the 2014 Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix.

With her first single in two years due to be released next month, we caught up with her to talk about all things motoring.

What was your first car?

It was a Toyota Echo, sliver, and I pranged it. And it was replaced by a navy blue Echo that I pranged. Then a bright red Echo…that I pranged. Then I bought a dual cab ute and I never pranged that.

What made the Echo stand out was how disgusting it was inside. Because I had it at university I half lived in it, there were all sorts of heels, lipsticks and nonsense in the back of it. I did not love or respect that car.

What are you currently driving and what do you love and hate about it?

In Sydney I have a 1994 BMW with a sunroof, also borderline roadworthy. I love the colour, and it's a lovely old comfortable drive. I hate having to park it in Surry Hills.

What car did your family have growing up?

We had a Pajero for most of my childhood. I grew up in Papua New Guinea so we had a big family car. We have always had tow balls on the back because my dad has boats.

What is your greatest frustration on the road?

Speed limits and slow traffic. And bus lanes…I could go on for hours.

Do you have any preferred driving music?

I like a bit of soul music in the car, Otis Redding and Sam Cooke, early '60s soul.

If you were to pick anyone in the world to go on a road trip, who would it be?

A stand-up comedian, David O'Doherty because he's the funniest person I know and he is very good at observational humour and also very good at anecdotal humour with lots of stories.
