Melita spreads Aussie sunshine

CENTRAL Highlands Sunflower Queen Melita Corbin jetted off last week to the Sunflower Festival in Canada.

Melita spends two weeks touring nearby towns before joining in with festival preparations in Altona – Emerald’s sister sity - on July 18.

“We will have dinners with the mayor, and there is fashion parade practise, so we have to be there a week before,” she explained.

During the festival Melita will sit on the judging panel as the sunflower entrants in Altona compete for the title.

“I’ll also have to do a couple of speeches while I’m there, thanking the town for having me over there, and on how my sunflower quest here in Australia went,” she said.

Melita is taking along mum Karen and younger sister Ruth for the experience.

“For the whole week we will be hosted by the sunflower queen’s family that came out here last year - the Krahns. While we are there, they will take us around and show us the sights,” said Karen.

“I have made Australiana placemats to give to our host families, as we are being hosted by two different families over there.”

One of Melita’s wishes during the trip was to visit the town she shares her name with.

“Guides, Scouts and Lions are a big part of my life, so we are doing a lunch with the Girl Guide group over there and we have got a Scout commissioner picking us up from one town and driving us to the town of Melita, so we can stay with the Lions members there.”
