THE tantalising smell of curry wafting in the air was enough to draw a crowd of curious onlookers through the doors of Ipswich's newly opened Australian Ministry of Food centre on Friday.

Based in d'Arcy Doyle Place, the centre was officially opened on Thursday, with cooking demonstrations held on Friday and Saturday.

A brainwave of well-known TV chef Jamie Oliver, the ministry aims to encourage proper eating habits.

Centre manager Danella Martin said the aim was to give people the confidence to make healthier choices.

“We also give tips on nutrition, shopping and basic ideas they can try out in the kitchen,” Ms Martin said.

She said people would be able to book in for classes after Easter.

Visiting from Sydney, Lori Arambasic was among those watching the demonstration.

Mrs Arambasic said the ministry was a great way for busy mums like herself to learn a few new tricks.

“I think it is good to freshen up your ideas,” she said.

“There are so many cookbooks on the shelves, but everyone likes a visual.”

Booval resident Elizabeth White and son Ben were also among those keenly watching the cooking process.

“We are both interested in cooking,” she said.

“We love watching Jamie on TV.”
