Mirani pair prays for relatives on missing flight

A MIRANI couple is praying for a miracle as their relatives, Catherine and Robert Lawton, remain missing after having been on the Malaysia Airlines flight which disappeared without a trace.

Callie and Dave Docherty are awaiting news of Mr and Mrs Lawton, who are Dave's aunt and uncle.

The Lawtons have visited Mackay a few times in the past.

Mrs Lawton and one of their daughters dropped into Mackay just over a year ago.

Mr and Mrs Docherty did not wish to comment on the tragic circumstances yesterday.

The Lawtons, who are from Springfield Lakes, near Ipswich, were among 239 people on board flight MH370, which disappeared between Malaysia's east coast and southern Vietnam on Saturday en route to China.

It's been reported that Mr and Mrs Lawton are keen travellers and planned a trip to China with their friends, Mary and Rodney Burrows, of Middle Park, who also remain missing.

Mr and Mrs Lawton have been described as devoted grandparents and caring neighbours who are loved and respected by all who know them.

It's been reported that a sign in front of their home welcoming grandchildren at any time summed up the couple.

It is unknown what happened in the minutes leading up to the plane's disappearance, when it lost contact with ground controllers.

No distress signals were received from the aircraft before it disappeared over the South China Sea.

An international search of the area has so far failed to find any trace of the missing plane.
