MKR 'spice queens' don’t deliver the heat
IT WAS all fun and giggles for Eva and Debra, until the My Kitchen Rules judges tasted their first dish.
The work mates hopes to serve up the best Asian food in MKR history at their instant restaurant tonight.
But an overpowering ginger broth, polarising anchovies and a curdled crème brulee put them at the bottom of the leaderboard.
Like Sheri and Emilie paying tributes to their grandmothers last night, Debra hoped to do her late grandmother proud with her wonton recipe.
But the ginger broth was too strong for most of the dinner guests.
The usually poker-faced judge Manu Feildel coughed several times while tasting the dish and then had to drink a glass of water.
"When I first saw this I was super excited and it did look good when it hit the table," Pete Evans said.
"I couldn't wait to taste it but I didn't like this at all; I'm sorry.
"The broth itself it is ginger… it should be full of the chicken fat and flavour. The wontons themselves were thick and undercooked. I think the flavour combinations are there but both of them need a lot more work and a lot more love."
Seeds of doubt sprouted as they prepared their main course Nasi Lemak, which had six separate elements.
"There's things that I love about this dish. I do love the anchovies and the rice together," Manu said.
"The rice is a 10 out of 10 on here.
"But the greens… you didn't bring any life to it. The chicken? Boring. I'm a little bit disappointed because I had high expectations for you."
The girls were flying blind with the third course as they didn't make any extra crème brulees to taste test before serving.
The mixture curdled and ended up resembling green eggs rather than the popular French dessert.
"I'm a fan of the Pandan and that's where it stopped unfortunately," Manu said.
"Technique wise, girls you've got the texture very wrong."
Their score of 46 means Toowoomba mates Sheri and Emilie are safe from the first elimination.
Former tennis pro Adam and his wife Carol will cook on Sunday.
