Mollie to plate up with top chef
IT TAKES a lot to render vivacious aspiring chef Mollie Maher speechless.
But a state award win and an offer of work experience with celebrity chef Matt Moran was enough to do it.
The Maroochydore State High School student won the Cookery Award at the recent Queensland Tourism Industry Council 2012 Salute to Excellence Awards.
Fellow Year 12 student Micky Rahn was runner-up in the Tourism category.
The pair underwent an intense day of interviews, theory tests and practical examinations during the school holidays.
Mollie, 17, has already been named Maroochydore High's 2011 Trainee of the Year, received an Acclaim Apprentice Chef Outstanding Achievement Award and finished second in the Nestle Golden Chef Hat through Novotel Twin Waters against cooks five years her senior.
The driven teenager has seized the opportunity to excel in her school's Trade Training Centre Coastal Cookery program and also works at Novotel Twin Waters under the direction of executive chef Steve Forrester.
"I'm really into a la carte plates," Mollie said.
"Making simple food look good by creatively dressing it up on a plate and seeing someone's expression when you put it in front of them is what I love the most."
