IF you're considering a dip around Lake Macquarie on this public holiday you may want to think again.
A giant bull shark has been caught off Swansea, south of Newcastle, towering over the fisherman who snared it.
The image, shared by Offshore Fishing NSW, shows the dead shark hanging from a hook.
Several Facebook users have criticised the taking of the shark with some saying such a catch requires a commercial licence.
However the group's post and several fisherman explained it had been "gut hooked" meaning it would most likely have died regardless.
The creature's size is apparent as the man pictured beside the carcass reveals its length more than double the fisherman's height.
The group reports it was "right off the cleaning tables at Blacksmith".
"There must be plenty around," Offshore Fishing NSW wrote.
Spectacular images of sharks in the region have captured attention in recent days, most notably footage of a hunt among the mullet off Fingal Bay emerged on Monday.
