More dams will make north Qld the 'promised land'

MORE dams will turn north Queensland into the "promised land of the 21st century" Whitsunday MP Jason Costigan told parliament.

Speaking on Tuesday, Mr Costigan praised the Federal Government's green paper calling for more dams.

He said the construction of the proposed Urannah Dam could provide water to mines and farms.

"New dams are vital to the future economic development of our state, especially for those places north of the tropic of Capricorn and that is something I'm most passionate about. Building a stronger regional Queensland which I consider to be the promised land of the 21st century," he said.

"That's why I'm encouraged by the Federal Government's push into this area of public policy.

"It may well be a big deal, of course, if we run out of water."

Mr Costigan said job creation would only occur if the state had water for new farming or mining projects.

The Federal proposal to build more dams in northern Australia was questioned by environmental groups.

Australian Conservation Foundation spokesman Jonathan La Nauze stated more dams would repeat the errors of the past.

"Plans for industrial-scale agriculture in northern Australia risk repeating the disastrous mistakes of the Murray-Darling Basin - mistakes that have taken decades to address," he said.
