More fireworks on The Voice

THE dramatic battle rounds of The Voice Australia continued tonight, with Australian Idol winner Guy Sebastian's brother Chris surviving to sing another day.

After Mahalia Barnes' surprising elimination last night, all eyes were on Sebastian as the other high-profile contestant.

But both Sebastian and Yshrael Pascual struggled in their performance of Katy Perry's Firework.

"I don't think either of you performed that song particularly well," Seal said.

But Sebastian's confidence and poise smoothed over his mistakes.

Youth worker Taga Paa took on stay-at-home dad Cam Tapp in Eric Clapton's classic If I Could Change the World in the first battle of the night.

Paa's emotional connection to the song beat out Tapp's on-stage experience, earning him a unanimous vote from the coaches.

Then it was a battle of the beauties with Peta Jeffress singing her favourite song Purple Rain, by Prince, against the quirky Viktoria Bolonina.

Bolonina won over coach Delta Goodrem and mentor Darren Hayes with her unique take on the song.

Seal asked young construction worker Michael Duchesne and father-of-two Anthony Dellamarta to sing the Steve Wonder's soul song Living for the City.

Duchesne overcame his nerves to narrowly win Seal's stamp of approval.

In his first pairing of the night, Joel Madden tasked his young heartthrobs Nick Len and Lakyn Heperi with singing Angus and Julia Stone's Triple J Hottest 100 chart-topping song Big Jet Plane.

"It was like the Twilight battle," Madden joked before picking the eccentric Heperi.

As Heperi walked off the stage, Urban could be heard tell him he's go see in him concert.

The second "diva off" of the battle rounds, or diva derby as Urban called it, saw Danni Da Ros and Sarah Lloyde belting out Mariah Carey's Hero.

Both singers made tearful appeals to Goodrem, who chose to give singing teacher Ros another chance.

Urban challenged his two frontmen Jimmy Cupples and Glenn Whitehall to break out of their comfort zones with his song choice of Plans by Birds of Tokyo.

He consulted his mentor Megan Washington before choosing to stick with Cupples for his "pub rock spirit".

Laura Bunting stayed true to her style while shedding enough of her musical theatre sound  in her performance of What's Up? by the 4 Non Blondes to beat young singer Mali-Koa Hood.

The battle rounds continue on The Voice on Monday at 7.30pm on Channel 9.
