MP causes fury saying gunman only 'man' in cafe

CONTROVERSIAL NSW MP Fred Nile has sparked further outrage after he claimed the only man in the Martin Place cafe siege was the gunman.

Reverend Nile's comments come on the back of comments he made earlier this week when he said the men who fled the Lindt cafe leaving women behind should not receive bravery awards.

The Christian Democrat Party leader said giving the men bravery awards would cheapen its value.

Mr Nile took to breakfast television on Thursday in an attempt to explain his earlier comments, but instead he caused more public furore.

"Usually men try to protect the women, but it looks like the men were trying to protect their own skins," Rev Nile said.

"Where were the men? The only man really there was the man with the gun."

However, Mr Nile later claimed his comments on Channel 7's Sunrise program had been taken out of context, but stood by his comments that most of the hostages were undeserving of bravery awards.

But he said the two hostages killed in the December 16 siege, Tori Johnson, 34, and Katrina Dawson, 38, should receive bravery awards.

Mr Nile took to Twitter later in the day in an attempt to backtrack over the comments he made on television.

"Yes I misspoke. The terrorist was a coward. As I tweeted yesterday, the hero was the man WRESTLING with the gun," he tweeted.

Rev Nile's Twitter summarises him as: CDP leader. NSW Upper House member. Not as cool as he looks. A nice guy who is much loved by almost all.
