THE fear of those few seconds before colliding with a vehicle at Mt Marlow will stay with Abbey and Jim Tozer for the rest of their life.

Tragically, the driver of a Hilux ute John Anderson died at the scene after the crash on Tuesday afternoon.

Abbey said no-one was to blame for the accident and thanked the community for all their support.

"We very much appreciate everyone's kind words and support," she said.

"It was just an unlucky accident in the wet that we all could not get out of.

Abbey and Jim know only too well how lucky they are to be alive, and while it will be a slow recovery ahead for the couple, they are understood to have avoided any permanent injuries.

"Jim and I are both speechless that we survived and devastated that John did not," she said.

Jim was airlifted to Mackay having sustained a cut to his head and serious bruising while Abbey was taken to Townsville hospital with a broken back in two places, broken rib, cracked sternum, punctured lung, heart haemorrhaging and a possible bowel tear.

Abbey called on everyone to take care on the roads and do everything they can to avoid getting into a life-threatening situation when driving.

"It's always been a dangerous corner and that road in general always has people speeding or being impatient," she said.

"It's pretty dangerous in the wet, everyone needs to slow down and pay attention."

A memorial home service is being held at 14815 Bruce Highway this Saturday January 7 at 2pm for Gregory River man John Anderson who passed away at the age of 74

Abbey encourages the community to pay their respects to John who has no relatives in the Whitsunday region.

"I hope the community pulls together for a send-off, he deserves that," she said.

For those wishing to attend the memorial service please call Zano Thorpe 0404067736.
