Mundine tilt at title hangs on all the right moves

ANTHONY Mundine has already proven himself in the boxing ring - now he's trying to prove himself as a chess player.

The multiple world-title winner is now engaging in a virtual chess battle in his efforts to become boxing's king of the grid - by hopefully defeating super welterweight/junior middleweight super champion Floyd Mayweather next year.

Mundine displayed world-class attack and defence against gallant New Zealander Gunnar Jackson in his recent 10-round win in Brisbane.

It was just one move in his strategy to progress higher up the board of the world fight game.

He plans to stay fit with another hopeful bout in April.

"I just want the big fights, not so much the money fights, but the big fights for where I want to go," Mundine told APN.

"And I couldn't get them (the big fighters) until I got (Shane) Mosley.

"I offered them all - (Miguel) Cotto, (Saul) Alvarez, all the top names and I told them I'd come over there for nothing.

"So if they don't want to fight me, I can't force them to. But I can checkmate them, and the way to checkmate them is to become champion."

To do that, Mundine wants to take on Cuban Erislandy Lara for the WBA title by the end of this year.

If he wins that fight, he could join a shortlist to take on the undefeated Mayweather.

Jackson suggested the man nicknamed Choc needed to improve if he was to match it in the ring with "Money" Mayweather.

"Anyone can match it with anyone on the night. I reckon Choc's got the tools to match it with Mayweather," Jackson said after his gallant loss which went the whole 10 rounds.

"But the performance he put up (against me), he won't match it with Mayweather.

"If he improves what he needs to do, I'll give him a chance."

Mundine bristled at that suggestion.

"Improve? I don't need to improve. All I need to improve is to just get in the ring more," he said.

"We're trying to get the best, and the next name we'll get will be a better calibre of fighter and a better name - you'll want to see what I do to him too."
