Nanna's frozen raspberries recalled following hep A outbreak

NANNA's frozen raspberries are now being recalled following a string of hepatitis A cases in three states.

The NSW Food Authority released an alert advising Patties Foods Ltd has extended its recall of Nanna's products to include it's Nanna's Raspberries because potential contamination with hepatitis A virus.

The product is sold nationally in Coles, Woolworths, IGA Supermarkets and independent stores.

Consumers are being advised not to consume any 1kg Nanna's Raspberries with best before dates up to and including September 15, 2016.

What is hepatitis A?

According to Hepatitis Australia, hepatitis A is:

  • A viral infection of the liver.
  • It is spread through the faecal-oral route or when infected faecal matter enters the mouth.
  • Symptoms can be debilitating but most people infected with hepatitis A recover completely.
  • Once you have had hepatitis A you cannot get it again.
  • Vaccination against hepatitis A is available.

Symptoms of hepatitis A

Symptoms of hepatitis A include:

  • fever;
  • weakness;
  • fatigue;
  • loss of appetite;
  • nausea;
  • joint aches and pains;
  • vomiting; and
  • jaundice (yellowish eyes and skin, dark urine and pale-coloured faeces).

The Hepatitis Australia website states: "Death because of hepatitis A infection is very rare.

"The likelihood of severe disease or death resulting from hepatitis A infection is much greater in people with pre-existing liver damage, including people with chronic liver disease due to hepatitis B or C, and people over 50 years of age."
