SEVENTY-SEVEN years after Mary Poppins was created, the world's most famous nanny has come to the home state of her author.

And she's come via Broadway, Europe, London and a Disney feature film.

The stage musical Mary Poppins premieres at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre tonight, just a few hundred kilometres from Maryborough, the birthplace of the books' author P.L. Travers.

It is a spiritual homecoming of sorts for the character made famous by Julie Andrews, as the cast is only too aware, though it is not the most challenging part of the Brisbane performances.

Disney Theatrical Australia managing director James Thane said the hardest part of staging the show in Brisbane was actually booking a slot in QPAC's busy schedule.
