National hockey sides suffer double defeat in NZ

HOCKEY: The Kookaburras are heading to Melbourne for the International Festival of Hockey with plenty to work on after a rare loss in New Zealand.

Australia had already done enough to claim the inaugural Trans-Tasman Trophy on Sunday, but both men and women suffered defeats in their third and final matches in Auckland.

For the Kookaburras, who scored through Jeremy Hayward but lost 2-1, it was their first defeat to the Black Sticks in New Zealand in 50 years.

"We need to improve our penalty corner conversions for the Melbourne tournament,” interim head coach Paul Gaudoin said.

Both the Kookaburras and Hockeyroos take on India on Wednesday night in a five-day competition also including Malaysia and the Kiwis.
