IT'S often the tiny details that parents soak up when cradling their newborn babies, and it's focussing on those details that earned a Noosa photographer state-wide recognition.
Rebecca Colefax submitted four newborn images and was named finalist in the AIPP Queensland Epson Professional Newborn Photographer of the year.
One of those images that caught the judges' eye focussed on the top of a baby girl's head, from the eyebrows up.
"That image I chose because the hairline of the baby was really unique," Ms Colefax said.
"She had quite a lot of hair but it looked like she had a thumb print right on the top of her head, that's just the way the swirl of her hair had naturally occurred on the top of her head.
"It was natural and unique to that baby."
For Ms Colefax it was a privilege to earn recognition within her industry for her work, but it also offered the chance to gain valuable feedback and push herself to keep her technical skills up-to-date in an ever-changing industry.
"What they need to see is images with impact, mood and emotion, technical skills and something outside the square," she said.
"It pushes me to be a little bit more creative, to look for that wow factor.
"I spend literally days and weeks brainstorming new ideas, shooting and sometimes re-shooting; hours and hours selecting the ones I think are worthy, editing, re-editing and then doing it all again because I can't seem to get it just right.
"Then test printing, editing again, re-printing, mounting and finally sending them in to be judged in front of a panel of experts.
"Having my work critiqued by some of the best in the industry can be a bitter pill to swallow, yet I strongly believe every step I take towards bettering my skills makes me happy and ultimately my clients too."
That kind of dedication was something Ms Colefax said she applied to all her images, but when it came to working with clients the real key was discovering what they were looking for.
"I can photograph anything but I just like to be able to provide my customers with the images they envisage rather than putting them in a box," she said.
Ms Colefax photographs weddings, families, births, newborns and does maternity shoots either outdoors, in homes or hospitals or in her Noosa studio.
