Rockhampton man sexually abused 10-year-old neighbour

A MAN who sexually abused a mentally-impaired 10-year-old boy was like an "older brother to his victim", the District Court of Rockhampton heard yesterday.

The Rockhampton man, aged 29 at the time of offending in 2009, pleaded guilty to two charges of indecent treatment of a child under 12 years whilst under care.

The court heard the boy, who had an IQ of 58, went to the defendant's house on July 25, 2009, his neighbour at the time.

The court heard the man woke the boy that night, and asked if he wanted to perform oral sex on him.

When the boy said 'no', the defendant pulled the boy's pants down, and performed oral sex on him for about 15 minutes, before he heard his girlfriend in a nearby room and stopped.

At a time between July 31 and August 12, he drove the boy to soccer fields before he pulled over, and told the boy to "get in the back".

He then committed a similar offence, only stopping when a car drove past.

The court heard the boy had difficulty in the classroom, in his relationships with others and he would require assistance in the future as a result.

The defendant, now 36-years-old, was caught by police when the complainant contacted him on Facebook in September last year.

The man's own admissions in messages to the victim assisted police in his arrest.

Defence barrister Scott Moon told the court the man described his offences as "opportunistic", but he could not "step away from the fact it was a serious breach of trust".

He told the court the man admitted his behaviour was "deplorable, and was disgusted by his own actions".

Judge Burnett delivered a two-year head sentence suspended after seven months with two years probation.
