Nevill ton a timely reminder to selectors

CRICKET: Dropped Australian wicketkeeper Peter Nevill has reminded selectors just what he is capable of, scoring 179 not out for New South Wales against Tasmania in the Sheffield Shield.

Ironically, the keeper's innings, which was stretched over the first two days in Hobart, was on the same Bellerive Oval pitch on which he scored just three and six against South Africa two weeks ago, leading to his Test axing.

Nevill (pictured) shared a 221-run stand with another Test hopeful, Moises Henriques, who scored 115, as NSW declared its first innings on 5-495 against the Tigers.

The keeper also added a 129-run partnership with Ryan Gibson (65 not out) before the declaration as the visitors racked up an impressive score.

Nevill then took three catches as Tasmania's top order crumbled in reply.

Joe Mennie, who was also axed after that terrible loss to the Proteas in Hobart, picked up two wickets on day two against Victoria at the MCG.

Mennie took the scalps of Marcus Harris and Marcus Stoinis as the home team set about getting close to the Redbacks' first innings total of 405.

Another Test aspirant, Glenn Maxwell, failed another audition, scoring six in Victoria's first innings.

He was picked up by Chadd Sayers, who was 12th man for the Adelaide Test.

In Townsville on day two of the Shield clash with Queensland, Western Australian Test all-rounder Mitch Marsh took 2-74 before another failure with the bat, scoring 14, as WA looked to chase down the Bulls' first-innings total of 422.
