New laser improves prostate surgery

A NEW green light laser technique has drastically changed the way prostate surgery is being performed.

The advanced technology is a first, not only for Mackay Base Hospital, but also for regional hospitals in Queensland.

Mackay Base Hospital urologist Dr Muhammad Kahloon said the new technique was a great advance which resulted in a faster recovery time, with the hospital stay reduced to overnight instead of two or three days.

The prostate gland, if enlarged, can obstruct the flow of urine for men over 50.

The green light laser delivers energy to vaporise excess tissue that is blocking the urethra and preventing urine flow.

"This procedure is life changing for men who have urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate," Dr Kahloon said.

"The symptoms can be very debilitating and impact on their quality of life.

"Using the green light laser has many benefits to the patient.

"These include less bleeding, shorter hospital stays, quicker recovery and less time off work."

Dr Kahloon, along with a team of other hospital staff, were under the instruction of a mentor for yesterday's procedure. It was Dr Kahloon's first time conducting the procedure.

"It's much more efficient," he said.

"We get good results, so that's satisfying for us."

Previously, patients would have had to fly to Brisbane to have the surgery, which takes about an hour to perform.

"Fortunately, we can look after them here now," Dr Kahloon said.
