Pole dancing under water? This is new for Toowoomba
TOOWOOMBA is now home to the first Acquapole class in Queensland.
TJ's Swim at the Baillie Henderson Hospital Grounds is the first pool in the state to train instructors and offer classes on the poles.
The aqua fitness craze has been converting participants all over the world with the idea starting in Italy.
TJ's Swim are offering 15 pole related classes a week with a mixture of boxing, cardio and normal pole classes.
Acquapole instructor Kristy McCallum said the classes have been very popular and the pole aspect hasn't scared anyone off.
"The older ladies love it.
"They were pleasantly surprised at what they could do on the pole opposed to out of the water."
Dawn Mason is a Toowoomba local who was initially hesitant to use the pole but is now a convert.
"It's different, it's interesting.
"I quite like it.
"We're like kids in a candy store now."
Exercising in the water provides six times the levels of resistance compared to exercise done on land.
Owner of TJ's Swim Jodie Chandler said Acquapole was a fun way to get people involved in aqua fitness.
"It's using the pole for stability.
"It works your core muscles and back strength using the resistance of the water."
Melanie Daw agrees with Jodie, having lost 20 kilograms since May last year purely through fitness classes in the water.
"It starts my day off great and gives me heaps of energy.
"I love it."
