Chief Justice Paul de Jersey will be the Queensland Governor

THE worst kept secret in town has finally been made official.

Premier Campbell Newman put an end to the rumour mill today when he announced Chief Justice Paul de Jersey will replace Penelope Wensley as Queensland Governor when her term expires in five months.

Mr Newman said Chief Justice de Jersey will formally take over from Ms Wensley on July 29.

His Honour was born in Brisbane and raised in country Queensland as the third son of schoolteacher parents and is a proud Queenslander who has made a huge contribution to the legal profession," he said.

"His extensive experience and service to the people of Queensland makes him not just qualified, but the perfect fit for this important role.

"The Chief Justice practised as a barrister for 14 years, the last three years as Queen's Counsel before being appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of Queensland for 13 years.

"From there, he has served the people of Queensland impeccably as the head of the Queensland court system."

Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk said Mr de Jersey was the perfect person for the role.

"This is a good choice and one that will have widespread community support," she said.

"It is a decision that we can all agree on.

"Chief Justice De Jersey has had an outstanding legal career and I have no doubt he will serve with distinction as Governor."

Mr de Jersey will be the 26th Queensland Governor.
