FOR Lennox Head-based stockbroker turned photographer Craig Parry, innovation is the key to business success.
While many pay lip service to the concept, Mr Parry has put his cash where his mouth is by purchasing a miniature electric remote-controlled helicopter to get, as they call it in photographer jargon, the money shot.
“About a year ago I decided I wanted to get a different angle and a regular helicopter isn't cost effective,” said Mr Parry, who started his company and gallery specialising in surf, portrait and wedding photography about 18 months ago.
“It's been a long journey because it is difficult to fly and I had to purchase a simulator.”
However, it does allow him to get his camera closer to the action.
“My passion is water and surf photography, but this new equipment will open up new doors for the business,” Mr Parry said.
‘It is so new I have to write a business plan about it because it is new to everybody – no one has really done itbefore.”
To his knowledge there is only one other person in Northern NSW who uses the technology, but only for videos, not still photography.
Mr Parry said he invested in the helicopter because he was always looking for new ways to grow in a tough market.
“I'm always looking for new ventures to grow. It gets me excited,” he said.
