New Zealand win World Series

NEW Zealand avenged their Rio Olympic loss to Australia 12 months ago by relegating their rugby sevens arch rival to second place overall in the women's World Series.

Australia finished second in the final tournament in Clermont-Ferrand, France, on Monday morning (EST) as the Kiwis took out both the event and series titles.

The New Zealanders sewed up the series win with their 21-7 victory over France in the semis before notching the same scoreline against Australia to claim the honours in the final tournament of the series.

Canada replicated their Rio Olympic result by finishing third.

"New Zealand have had an exceptional year and they finished it well,” Australia coach Tim Walsh said.

"It certainly gives us motivation and desire to come back next year in what is a very big year with the Commonwealth Games and the World Cup.

"We're looking to be peaking for those events. We'll certainly be taking a lot out of this season.

"There are some good young players coming through which is great and bodes well for the future of Australian women's rugby, so we've got make sure we stay at the top and win those big events.”

On the final day in France, Australia beat the US 31-14 and Canada 19-14 before going down to New Zealand in the final.
