Newborn girl denied life-saving surgery by doctors

THE parents of a six-month-old Darwin girl born with a congenital heart defect are devastated after she was denied life-saving heart surgery.

The family is now demanding Royal Darwin Hospital undertake an internal investigation into the circumstances that led to the decision to prevent little Doreen Pastrikos from having the procedure.

The operation was originally scheduled to be performed at the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne.

Sandra and Lambros Pastrikos have also hit out at the lack of sensitivity by RDH clinicians, claiming they were advised to let their little girl's illness "take its course" and "let (Doreen) be the decider of what to do".

The couple have been lobbying for the past three months for Doreen to receive life-saving open heart surgery - or a TOF repair - to correct a condition known as Tetralogy of Fallot.
